Tesamorelin is approved by the FDA as Egrifta for the reduction of excess visceral abdominal fat in HIV-associated lipodystrophy (2010). An approved product is commercially available. Use outside that indication is off-label.
Because an approved product is commercially available, a compounded tesamorelin preparation may be dispensed under section 503A only where the prescriber determines, for an identified individual patient, that the compounded preparation produces a clinically significant difference from the approved product, and records that determination on the prescription.
Tesamorelin is not sold for research use and is not available for direct purchase. It is dispensed only following a clinical consultation, pursuant to a patient-specific prescription, and filled by a licensed 503A compounding pharmacy. A compounded preparation is not an FDA-approved product.
